Trouble in Boob Land

So all at once, I have mastitis, caused by the thrush from precious little babe, and am completely losing my milk! Not to mention that my nips are still bleeding. Help! I have started pumping every 3 hours all day long and giving her bottles so my nips can heal, but I'm only getting out about 1.5 oz. (that's a total, between the two sides) each pumping. I'm now taking antibiotics for the mastitis (which feels way better, thank you brother-in-law Justin since my Dr. wanted to send me to the e.r. last night instead of trusting me and calling me in something). I'm also taking a medicine for increased milk production, but I can only take it a couple times a day since it acts like a sleeping pill with me. And it obviously isn't working too well, given the 1.5 oz. I am so sad about that. I didn't think I would be, but of all my babies, this is the one who LOVES to nurse. It makes her so happy and content, that it makes me really sad that it #1, hurts so bad right now, and #2, nothing is hardly coming out. Also, with all the health scares abounding (and I'm not paranoid, but naturally recognize that newborns are suceptible to illness), I really want her to have breastmilk to boost her immune system. I am so sad. If anyone has any other brilliant ideas on how to help me, I'd love to hear them. Otherwise, just pray for me. That's the only thing I can think of that will help me now.

  2. Oh Sis. I am seriously in tears reading this. I can't believe how bad it is for you. Sooo incredibly sad. I haven't talked to you in too long apparently. I am so sad for you. You are obviously doing everything you can to make nursing work, I will keep praying that things will get better for you. Wish there was something I could say or do to make things better. Love you!

  3. I have been there (except that Paul didn't want to nurse, plus I had only an ounce and a half of milk, plus pain). Things that help are warm compresses (or warm showers), using a HAND pump instead of the insipid electric ones that don't really empty you correctly most of the time, and pumping less milk more often. Lots of probiotics, etc also. Going through that was a very dark time for me, so I hope you get lots of rest and heal really quickly!

  4. Oh, I forgot to add drinking more than a GALLON of water a day and increasing protein and staying away from sugar. If I think of anything else I learned, I'll post more.

  5. I am so so sorry! I only know a teeny bit about the way you're feeling. Let me know if I can help out in any way! =) my only advice is to do what you think is best!

  6. I hate to read something like this! I feel like nursing is a mother's birthright and everyone that wants to should be able to do it! But life just isn't that fair. It sounds like you are doing the best that you can. Hopefully you will start producing more after the mastitis clears up. In the meantime, you can always bring baby Margaret over to me. I have enough breastmilk to feed the neighborhood!;)
